Pineapple country

James Dole planted his first pineapple fields near Wahiawa in 1900, and within a generation the fruit had reshaped central Oahu's economy, landscape and even its soil, which glows rust-red between the rows. What began as a simple fruit stand in 1950 grew into Dole Plantation, now one of Hawaii's most visited attractions.

The plantation is the tour's 40-minute finale, timed for the golden late-afternoon light over the fields, with the Waiʻanae mountains on the horizon.

How to spend your 40 minutes

First decision: Dole Whip. The pineapple soft-serve is the plantation's signature, and ordering it as a float in fresh pineapple juice is the veteran move. Then choose your adventure: the Pineapple Express train ride through the working fields, the Pineapple Garden Maze, certified the world's largest with almost two and a half miles of paths, or the garden tour of exotic fruit varieties.

The gift shop is genuinely good for edible souvenirs: chocolate-covered macadamias, pineapple salsa and fruit you can carry home. From here it is an easy cruise past Pearl Harbor back to Waikiki, arriving around 4:30 PM.

One pineapple takes nearly two years to grow. The Dole Whip disappears in four minutes. Life is unfair to pineapples.
